In early 2018 the UK government Depeartment for Education (DfE) announced that it would be going ahead with so called baseline testing of 4-year-olds when they enter reception classes in schools in England. They would be commisisoning the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) to carry out an extensive pilot study beginning in the school year 2018-19. The British Educational Research Association (BERA) set up a task force to comment on these proposals, in collaboration with the main teacher union the National Educational Union, which was highly critical and published in July 2018. Subsequent to that the DfE responded and a commentary on that response has been drawn up.
